The BBCENS was conceptualized in January of 2015 by business owners Clarence and Wendy Weaver (C&W Market and Ice Cream Parlor) and Larry and Jean Murphy (YoFresh Cafe). They envisioned the creation of a group of business owners who could provide networking support, resources and technical assistance to each other. In February 2015, their vision materialized as over 20 Black business owners came together at a joint meeting and reception to discuss how best to make this happen.
Since 2015 the BBCENS and has been networking, collaborating, and partnering with its membership in an effort to inform the public about the efficacy of its membership, and the number and variety of businesses that are in close proximity and spread throughout the nine wards of Evanston. In doing so, we are proud to say that many alliances have been established with city and community-based agencies and institutions.
Over the past five years the work of the BBCENS has been extensive. It has sponsored multiple workshops for it's membership (e.g., How to Prepare Youth for the Workplace Setting; 2020 Tax Information; Effective Communication Strategies for the Workplace Setting). In addition, in 2019 it sponsored two social gatherings for members: Valentine and Christmas parties. It has informed the larger public about the numbers and types of business through it's annual Le Tour de Noir Entrepise and Expo (2016-2020). And, members active in leadership of the BBCENS have added visibility and viability to the BBCENS through the city-wide agencies, boards and committees that they serve on.
The print directory, in it's fourth year of publication, is an additional tool used to inform the public about the number and variety of black-owned businesses. It is updated annually, to reflect changes and growth in the industry. For example, initially, most businesses listed were brick and mortar; today the directory includes online and home-based businesses as well. Our website, keeps current BBCENS activity, new businesses, and governmental policies that might impact businesses. It is updated as new information is provided.
The BBCENS seven-member board meets quarterly (January, April, September) to plan, review, and set policy for the upcoming year. Meetings are open to membership, and dates published on line. The Board wishes to acknowledge the scores of volunteers who help to plan the annual Bus Tour and Expo.
The BBCENS continues to work in cooperation with the City of Evanston, Evanston Community Bank and Trust, a Wintrust Bank, and Byline Banks (formerly First Bank and Trust). These alliances have provided additional visibility, along with media, personnel resources, meeting space and funding that expanded and enhanced the work of the BBCENS, which is inclusive, covering the Black Diaspora: African American, Haitian, Belizean, Jamaican and African.
The 5th Annual Le Tour de Noir - Bus Tour & Outdoor Expo
Save the Date: Saturday, July 16, 2022
We are excited to announce the return of the Black Business Consortium Evanston Northshore (BBCENS) 5th Annual Le Tour de Noir Bus Tour and 4th Annual Marketplace & Expo; July 16, 2022 from 11:00am to 7:00pm. We were planning our 5th annual Small Business BIG Impact 4.0, when the pandemic hit two years ago. Several small black businesses had to shut down for months due to the economic impact, and a few closed. We are back to help promote these businesses with two guided trolley bus tours, highlighting black businesses and organizations throughout the Evanston community. After the trolley tour, return to James Park to enjoy the Marketplace & Expo with more than 30 vendors. We have changed the venue from an indoor location at the Levy Center to the James Park. This is a great opportunity for small businesses to share resources, network and sell products. Register for tour and lake front expo at www.blackbizevenston-nz.org starting June 1st. The website will be updated soon for vendors and tourist to register. Come out and support these businesses like never before!
For further information, email us at email@example.com or Wendy Weaver at (847) 833-9764.
